Electrical Stimulation for the Affected Hand After Stroke

Researchers at The University of Cincinnati are looking for people who have experienced compromised movement of their arm as a result of a stroke.

We are conducting a study that provides electrical stimulation to the affected wrists and fingers of stroke patients.

We are looking for people who:

  • Between the ages of 18 and 80
  • Experienced a stroke NO MORE THAN 6 MONTHS AGO
  • Are able to move the wrist affected by the stroke slightly, even if its uncoordinated
  • Have experienced only one stroke
  • Are able to follow commands
  • Have NO history of cardiac arrhythmias with hemodynamic instability
  • Have NO uncontrolled seizures
  • Have NOT completely lost sensation in the affected arm

What to Expect

  • Upon arrival you will be asked about your general medical history.
  • Your communication ability, range of motion, pain, muscle stiffness, and muscular activity in your arm will then be assessed.
  • If eligible, you will be enrolled in a program where we give you one of three different electrical stimulation regimens for your wrist and fingers.
  • You will use one of the machines for approximately 8 weeks

Your confidentiality will be completely respected, and if findings from the study are published, you will not be identified by name. You may, at any time, discontinue your participation.
